Adding Subscription Plans 

Overview 

Shopify provides you with a great platform to run your e-commerce store where you can scale your business by selling products or services to customers on a subscription basis. The Chargebee App is a Shopify subscription app that allows you to create subscription plans and manage your customers' subscriptions enabling them to purchase your products on a recurring basis. The Chargebee App subscription plans are designed based on pay-per-delivery subscription model where the delivery and billing frequency are the same. For each subscription plan here are the features you can define:

  • Plan frequencies (day, week, month, year)
  • Plan discounts (flat rate and percentage). This feature enables you to set up a Subscribe & Save subscription model where the customer gets a discount off the product's price if they purchase a subscription.

Creating a Subscription plan is mandatory to sell your products or services to customers on a subscription basis. The Chargebee app has an intuitive web interface that allows you to create subscription plans, define plan and billing frequencies, and also add products to it. For a specific subscription plan, you can define multiple plan frequencies that give your customer an option to select the subscription plan that best fits their need.

To add a subscription plan, you need to follow the prerequisites  and install the Chargebee App in your Shopify store. Once you have installed the app in your Shopify store, you can quickly get started by adding a subscription plan and products in your Shopify store. Adding a subscription plan enables you to offer the products to your customers on a recurring basis. Customers can subscribe to a specific plan and make a purchase from your Shopify store using Shopify checkout.

Adding a Subscription Plan 

A subscription plan consists of related products, shipping and billing frequencies, and any discounts you want to offer your customers. The app supports the pay-per-delivery subscription model to help you create subscription plans and process the recurring orders of your customers.

Pay-Per-Delivery: The app supports the pay-per-delivery subscription plan that gives your customers the flexibility to pay for a subscription product per delivery of that product or service.

The app allows you to create pay-per-delivery subscription plans for the products and your customers are billed on each delivery of the product.
In addition, this app supports the Subscribe and Save option enabling you to define the subscription plans with a discount off the product's original price. This encourages your customers to buy the product and save an additional amount off the product when they subscribe.

Creating a Subscription Plan 

To create a subscription plan for products in your Shopify store, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your Shopify store.

  2. Click Apps in the left navigation of the Shopify admin page and select Chargebee: Subscriptions App from the installed apps section.

  3. In the Chargebee app onboarding page, click Create Subscription Plan under Add subscription plans section.

  4. In the Create Subscription Plan page, specify the following details:

    • Plan Name: Enter the customer-facing name for this plan that is visible on your product page.

    • Internal Name(optional): Enter an internal name of the plan that is visible only to you and your team.

    • Plan Frequencies: A Plan can have up to five frequencies to give the customer flexibility to buy subscriptions that fits their needs. Specify the following information to define a plan frequency:

    • Frequency Option Label: Add the frequency option label that is used before the frequency options on the product page. This label will be visible to your customers when they select a specific plan and frequency option from the Product page. You can live preview the label information within the Customer Facing Widget.

    • Create Order Every: Add the number of orders to be created in this plan by day, week, month or year frequency. Once the plan frequency is defined, the billing frequency is automatically created. Ensure that your order frequency and billing frequency are the same.

    • Frequency name: Enter a unique subscription frequency option that customers select from the product page.

    • Frequency description: Enter a short description of the frequency options to show customers in their carts and the checkout page.

    • Discounts Type(optional): Add the Discount type you want to offer your customers when they purchase a product as a subscription. Discounts are defined at the frequency level. You can choose from these two discount types:

      • Percentage Discount: Percentage discount off the product's original price that is listed on your product within the Shopify product catalog.

      • Fixed Amount Discount: Fixed amount discount off the product's original price that is listed on your product within the Shopify product catalog. For a fixed amount discount, the currency will be automatically determined based on the currency set in your Shopify store. The Chargebee app supports all the currencies that you set for your Shopify store. Click Supported currency to know more about currencies supported by Shopify Payments.

    • Promotional Description(optional): Add a short description specific to this frequency option.

    • Add Products: Add products(from your Shopify product catalog) to this subscription plan by clicking + Add Products option under the Product section. This enables the selected product(s) to be sold as a subscription.

  5. Click Create.

Adding Products to an existing Subscription Plan 

Note
  • You must have your subscription widget published on your Shopify store theme to display the subscription plan options on product page and enable customers to buy your product as a subscription.
  • To add products to a subscription plan, ensure that subscription plan contains at least one plan frequency.

You can add products to an existing subscription plan by following the steps:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans at the top of the header.

  2. Select a specific plan to which you want to add products.

  3. In the Plans details page, click + Add Products under the product section.

  4. In the Select Product popup, select one or more products that you want to add to this subscription plan.

  5. Click Add Products.

Removing Products from a Subscription Plan 

Note

When products are removed from the subscription plan, your customers will no longer be able to subscribe and purchase the product as a subscription.

Follow the below steps to remove products from the subscription plans:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans at the top of the header.

  2. Select a specific plan from the Plans page.

  3. In the Plans details page, under the products section, select a specific product you want to remove and click the ellipsis icon next to it.

  4. Click Remove and Confirm to remove the product from the plan.

Subscription Plans Actions 

As you create a subscription plan, you may need to manage and configure the details of the subscriptions. A subscription plan allows your customers to purchase your product or service on a recurring basis. A subscription plan is made up of three components; Subscription Plan Name, Plan Frequencies, and Products. Each of these components can be edited and deleted.

Editing a Subscription Plan 

A subscription plan has components that define plan details such as the plan name, frequency, discounts, and products added to it. You can edit the details of a subscription plan by updating the details of its component.

To edit a subscription plan, follow these steps:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans at the top of the header.
  2. Select a specific plan which you want to edit.
  3. In the plans details page, click Edit Subscription Plan.
  4. In the Edit Subscription Plan page, you can edit the following components:
    • Plan details such as Plan Name, and Plan internal name(visible to you and your team members).
    • Plan frequencies and Discount details.
    • Add or remove the products.
  5. Once you update the subscription plan, click Update.

Deleting a Subscription Plan 

Note

After deleting a subscription plan, the plan frequencies, discounts, and products added to it will also get removed from the subscription plan. The customer will no longer be able to subscribe and purchase the products defined in the subscription plan.

Follow the below steps to delete a subscription plan from the app:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans at the top of the header.

  2. Select a specific plan which you want to delete.

  3. Click Delete Subscription Plan and confirm your decision. The subscription plan will be removed and permanently deleted. This action cannot be reversed.

All the subscriptions, customers' purchase records, and orders associated with the subscription plan will still be available on the Subscriptions details page.

Plan Frequency Actions 

The plan frequencies associated with a subscription plan can be accessed and managed from the Plan details page in Chargebee app. The plan frequencies can be managed by performing the following actions:

Adding Plan Frequencies 

When creating a subscription plan you need to define at least one plan frequency to enable businesses to sell products on a recurring basis.

Chargebee app allows you to create the following frequency options for a subscription plan:

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Yearly

Each of these frequencies can be configured by adding the number of orders within the Create order every field in the Edit Subscription Plan page. You can add plan frequencies to a subscription plan in the following two ways:

  • While creating a subscription plan initially.
  • While editing an existing subscription plan.

Follow the below steps to add plan frequencies to an existing or new subscription plan:

  1. In the Shopify admin, click Apps > Chargebee: Subscriptions App.

  2. On the app home page, click Plans at the top of the header.

  3. In the Plan details page, select a plan where you want to add frequencies.

  4. Click Edit Subscription Plan at the top-right of the plan details page.

  5. Under the Edit Subscription Plan page, click + Add Frequency option and follow the steps mentioned in creating a subscription plan.

  6. Click Update to update the frequency specific to a subscription plan.

Here is the example that illustrates how you can create a frequency option in the "Subscribe & Save" plan that ships the item every year.

Editing Plan Frequencies 

After creating a subscription plan, you can update plan frequencies by editing the details such as frequency option label, order frequency, frequency name, and discount information.

Follow the steps below to edit the plan frequencies of a Subscription plan:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans section at the top of the header.

  2. Select a specific plan for which you want to edit the plan frequencies.

  3. In the Plans details page, click Edit Subscription Plan.

  4. In the Edit Subscription Plan page, select the plan frequency that you want edit and update the frequency details.

  5. Click Save.

  6. Click Update at the top of Edit Subscription Plan page.

The following illustration updates the plan frequency defined under the "Subscribe & Save" subscription plan.

Reordering Plan Frequencies 

The order of frequencies which you define while creating or updating a subscription plan is also the order in which they are displayed on the product page of your Shopify store. You can rearrange the plan's frequencies that display the same on the product page by simply dragging and dropping the frequencies in the desired order.

To reorder the plan frequencies defined in a specific subscription plan, follow the steps below:

  1. On the app home page, click the Plans section at the top of the header.
  2. Select a specific plan for which you want to edit the plan frequencies.
  3. Click Edit Subscription Plan at the top-right of the Plan Details page.
  4. In the Edit Subscription Plan page, hover over the plan frequencies that you want to reorder and click to move the frequency to the desired position that you want to display on the product page. You can also preview the order of the frequencies from the Customer-Facing Widget.
  5. Click Update.

In the following illustration, the plan frequencies defined under the "Subscribe & Save" subscription plan are reorganized and reordered.

Deleting Plan Frequencies 

Note

You cannot delete a plan frequency if you have only one frequency defined in a subscription plan.

To delete a Plan frequency associated with a subscription plan, follow these steps:

  1. On the app home page, click Plans section at the top of the header.

  2. Select a specific plan for which you want to delete the defined plan frequencies.

  3. Under the Plan Frequencies section, select a plan frequency and click the Trash icon next to it.

  4. Click Delete and Confirm.

Creating a Subscription Plan with Multiple Plan frequencies 

Note

You cannot define frequencies with same order and billing frequencies. To create a subscription plan with different plan frequencies, ensure that unique order frequency is selected.

With this feature, businesses can offer their customers multiple subscription frequency purchasing options. You can add up to five plan frequencies in a single subscription plan.

To create a subscription plan with multiple frequencies, under the Plan Frequencies section, click + Add Frequency and define the plan frequencies by adding its details and click Save.

Follow the steps below to add plan frequencies to an existing subscription plan:

  1. Navigate to Plans from the app homepage.
  2. Select a plan for which you want to add plan frequencies and click Edit Subscription Plan.
  3. Under Plan Frequencies, click + Add Frequency option to define a new frequency.
  4. Follow the steps mentioned in adding a subscription plan to define plan frequencies.
  5. Click Update.
