Failed order flow analysis

Failed order flow analysis in Reveal Transactions is the Sankey-style visualization of how orders move after an initial payment failure. It sits with Retry analysis and order recovery and answers a more specific question: of the orders that fail first, which paths recover, which switch payment methods, and which abandon.

In the UI the chart is labeled Failed order analysis (or Failed Invoice Analysis on many Chargebee-connected sites).

To open it, select Transactions, open Performance, then select the Retry & Recovery tab and locate the failed-order flow chart.

What the failed order flow chart shows

The chart helps you visualize:

  1. Initial payment attempts, which you can break down by parameters such as payment method, Funding Type, and Card Type
  2. The flow of failed orders into retries, including which payment method, Funding Type, or Card Type was used on a later attempt
  3. Changes in payment method during retries
  4. Success rates of retries with different payment methods
  5. Orders that were abandoned after a failed attempt (Dropped off)

How to interpret the chart

Use Failed order flow analysis as a fast read of checkout experience after a decline:

  • Thick flows into Success on early retries usually mean recovery is working for that segment.
  • Thick flows into Dropped off after Attempt 1 mean customers leave instead of retrying—pair this with Error analysis to see which decline reasons precede abandonment.
  • Method switches that recover (for example card → wallet) highlight alternative paths worth promoting at checkout.
  • Almost no retry flows can mean customers are not retrying, or that your processor integration records each attempt as an independent transaction so Reveal cannot link them to one order. Contact Chargebee Support if retry linkage looks wrong for your stack.

Example

You filter to one Gateway Account and see most first-attempt failures on a single Card Type flowing to Dropped off, while failures that switch Funding Type on Retry 1 recover more often. That pattern supports a checkout prompt to offer an alternate method after a soft decline, and a deeper look at that Card Type's top error codes.
