iDEAL via Checkout.com

iDEAL is the most popular payment method in the Netherlands. It enables customers to make online purchases through real-time bank transfers using their internet banking or mobile banking app.

iDEAL allows customers to complete payments directly from their bank account to your merchant bank account. Once a payment is completed, iDEAL provides an online payment guarantee, allowing you to deliver goods and services immediately.

iDEAL is typically used for the first payment which can get confirmed in real time. For subscription businesses, Chargebee supports recurring billing by converting the iDEAL payment method into Direct Debit (SEPA):

  • The first payment is processed via iDEAL.
  • All subsequent recurring payments are processed via Direct Debit (SEPA).

Choosing Checkout.com for iDEAL

Using iDEAL via Checkout.com allows you to:

Prerequisites

Before configuring iDEAL via Checkout.com in your Chargebee site, ensure the following:

  • You have an active Checkout.com account.
  • SEPA Direct Debit is configured via Checkout.com.
  • The Checkout.com payment gateway is configured in Chargebee. Learn more
  • iDEAL 2.0 is enabled in your Checkout.com account. Learn more

Additionally:

  • You must configure the Notification URL (webhooks) in Checkout.com to receive SEPA payment status updates. This setup is mandatory for the integration to work.

Configuring iDEAL via Checkout.com

To enable iDEAL via Checkout.com in Chargebee:

  1. Log in to your Chargebee site.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Payment Gateway > Checkout.com.
  3. Enable Direct Debit (SEPA). Refer to this document to learn how.
  4. Enable iDEAL (Recurring Via SEPA Direct Debit).

You have now enabled iDEAL via Checkout.com.

Handling Recurring Payments

Information

Checkout.com iDEAL supports only the initial payment. Chargebee converts the payment method to Direct Debit (SEPA) for recurring billing.

For subscriptions:

  • The first payment is completed via iDEAL.
  • The payment method is automatically converted to Direct Debit (SEPA).
  • All future renewals are charged via SEPA Direct Debit.

It is important to inform your customers that future recurring payments will not be processed via iDEAL.

Checkout Flow

The customer experience when paying with iDEAL is as follows:

  1. The customer selects iDEAL as the payment method during checkout.
  1. The customer reviews the terms of agreement and clicks Next.
  1. The customer reviews the order details and clicks Pay and subscribe.
  1. After completing the payment, the customer is redirected to Chargebee's confirmation screen.
    • The subscription is created.
    • All future renewals are charged via SEPA Direct Debit.

Limitations

  • iDEAL via Checkout.com can be used only for the first payment. Recurring payments are processed via SEPA Direct Debit.
  • The Notification URL configuration in Checkout.com is mandatory for SEPA status updates.
  • iDEAL via Checkout.com will not work with in-app browsers.

Important Notes

  • Chargebee allows you to send mandate creation notifications and payment pre-notifications directly from Chargebee.

To use this feature, ensure you collect customers' email addresses at checkout.
