Extend a trial and apply a discount
Set up a combined trial extension and discount offer in Chargebee Growth.
Overview
Some trial customers need both more time and a price incentive before they commit. A Trial Extension + Discount offer in Chargebee Growth extends the trial period of an in-trial subscription and applies a coupon from Chargebee Billing when the subscriber accepts—handled as one combined billing update so the extension and discount are applied together.
Use this offer when a standalone trial extension or a standalone discount is not enough, and you want a single Acquisition offer that delivers both.
In this tutorial, you'll create an audience, create the Trial Extension + Discount offer, configure the extension period and coupon, and create an Acquisition play so the offer is shown to the right users.
Alternative: Offers APIs
This tutorial helps you launch a Chargebee-hosted Trial Extension + Discount offer. Alternatively, to control where offers are presented (in-app, email, or instant messaging) and fully customize their look and feel, use the Offers APIs.
Before you start
- Connect Growth and Billing: Have Chargebee Growth enabled and connected to your Chargebee Billing site. This offer type is available for Chargebee Billing integrations only.
- Set up the coupon in Billing: Create the appropriate coupons in Chargebee Billing that you will apply when the offer is accepted (for example, a percentage or amount off).
- Integrate Growth with your application: Your app development team must follow the In-app offers integration guide to integrate Growth with your application so offers can be presented to users in your app.
Implementation steps
Follow these steps to create and launch a Trial Extension + Discount offer in Chargebee Growth.
1. Create an audience in Growth
First, ensure the Subscription Trial End Date field is mapped in Growth:
- In Growth, go to Settings > Setup.
- Under Field mappings, select Map fields.
- Scroll to the Subscription Trial End Date dropdown and ensure the value is Chargebee > Subscription Trial End.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save changes.
Next, define who sees the offer—for example, users whose trial ends within 5 days. Create an audience to target users whose trial ends within 5 days:
- In Growth, go to People > Audiences.
- Create a new audience with the following rule:
- Property: "Subscription trial end date"
- Operator: "Will take place within"
- Value: "5"
- Select Done to save the audience.
2. Create the Trial Extension + Discount offer in Growth
Define the Acquisition offer and how the trial extension and discount are applied when the customer accepts.
- In Growth, go to Offers > In-app.
- Create a new offer with the following configuration:
- Offer objective: Acquisition
- Offer category: Multi-offer
- Number of buttons: 2
- In the editor, customize the offer content in the right pane:
- Title: Select the edit icon and set the offer title. For example, "Get 7 more days free and 20% off"
- Description: Set the description. For example, "Extend your trial and lock in a discount when you convert"
- Button text (CTA): Set the button text and optional icon. For example, "Extend trial and save"
- Under Button > Settings:
- Set Button processing to Billing integration. This applies the trial extension and discount together using Chargebee Billing.
- Set Button action 1 (trial extension) as follows:
- Offer category: Extension (set by default and can't be changed)
- Offer subcategory: Extend Trial
- Duration: Enter the extension length (for example, 7 or 14)
- Interval: Select Days, Weeks, or Months
- Set Button action 2 (discount) as follows:
- Offer category: Discount (set by default and can't be changed)
- Discount option: Choose % based, $ based, or quantity based, as applicable for your coupon setup
- Coupon ID: Select the coupon from the dropdown of coupons in Chargebee Billing
- Select the back button (<)
- Under Button > Accept step, choose what happens after the user selects the offer button:
- Link: Sends the user to a URL, Redirect Page, or Global URL
- Confirmation modal: Shows a confirmation, then redirects to a URL, Redirect Page, or Global URL
- Send email with confirmation: Sends an email (for example, to an agent) and shows a confirmation modal—useful when offers are processed manually
- Select the back button (<)
- Optionally, under Offer settings > Card > Redemptions, set the maximum number of times a single customer can accept this offer
- Select Done > Publish to save the offer
Note
The subscription must be in trial when the offer is accepted. If the subscription is no longer in trial, Chargebee Growth does not apply the extension or the discount and records an error in the activity log.
3. Create an Acquisition play in Growth
Connect the audience and the offer so the combined offer is shown at the right moment.
- In Growth, go to Plays > Acquisition.
- Create a new play.
- Select the in-app offer play type.
- Select the audience you created in step 1.
- For Trigger, choose when the offer is evaluated (for example, Any page load or the trigger that fits your flow).
- For Action, select Show offer.
- Select the Trial Extension + Discount offer you created in step 2.
- Set the play priority.
- Select Publish Play to activate the play.
Result
After following the steps in this tutorial, you will have a Trial Extension + Discount offer configured in Chargebee Growth. Eligible in-trial subscribers who accept the offer receive both the trial extension and the discount in one billing update.
Summary
In this tutorial, you learned how to:
- Create an audience in Growth to target in-trial users.
- Create a Trial Extension + Discount offer that extends the trial and applies a Chargebee coupon together.
- Create an Acquisition play that uses the audience and offer so the combined incentive is shown to the right users at the right time.
