Deflect cancellations with a personalized cancel experience

Build a branded Cancel Page and route cancelling subscribers to it with a Retention play.

Overview

When a subscriber clicks cancel, a default "Are you sure?" prompt does nothing to change their mind. A Cancel Page turns that moment into a structured save funnel: it captures why the subscriber is leaving, reminds them of the value they would lose, and gives them alternatives to walking away.

In this tutorial, you build a Cancel Page in Chargebee Growth and route your cancelling subscribers to it with a Retention play. You configure survey reasons to capture churn drivers, add loss aversion cards that remind subscribers of their account value, set how cancellations are processed through Chargebee Billing, and publish a Cancel Page play that presents the experience inside your application. You can hold out a percentage of traffic as a control to measure the lift the page generates.

This Cancel Page is the foundation for every other retention play. Discounts, pause offers, and reason-based targeting all build on the experience you create here. For attaching save offers to this page, see Retain cancelling subscribers with targeted offers.

What you get: A branded cancellation experience that deflects cancellations, captures structured churn feedback, and serves as the base for save offers.

Before you start

  1. Connect Growth and Billing. Make sure Chargebee Growth is enabled and connected to Chargebee Billing, or your preferred billing system, to process cancellations.

  2. Integrate Growth with your application. Follow the installation guide to install Chargebee.js and launch cancel pages from your application. Once Chargebee.js is installed, new cancel plays work after publishing, with no additional engineering. You can optionally retrieve the cancel URL using APIs. Follow the Cancel Page Quickstart for the Chargebee.js setup.

If you use the Chargebee Self-Serve Portal, you can skip the Chargebee.js install. Enable a single toggle to route the portal's Cancel Subscription link to your cancel experience, with no code: in Chargebee Billing, go to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Checkout & Self-Serve Portal > Portal and enable Cancellation via Chargebee Retention. This requires the Allow customers to cancel subscriptions setting to be enabled.

  3. Decide how cancellations are processed. Determine whether cancellations are processed through the Chargebee Billing integration, other billing systems, webhooks, or a redirect. The billing integration requires no custom development and is the recommended option for Chargebee Billing merchants.

Implementation steps

Follow these steps to build a Cancel Page and route your cancelling subscribers to it.

1. Build and brand the Cancel Page

Create the experience your subscribers see when they initiate a cancellation. Cancel Pages are configured in the Experience Manager.

  1. In Growth, go to Experiences > Pages and create a new cancel page.
  2. Edit the headline to open with a personalized message. You can pull mapped fields, such as the subscriber's first name, into the headline.
  3. Add loss aversion cards that remind subscribers what they would lose. A page supports between zero and four cards, showing account activity, features in use, a personal message, or social proof.
  4. Click Page settings and configure the following:
    • Loss Aversion Layout
    • Billing Configurations
    • Button Configurations
    • Offers Configurations
    • Labels
  5. Click the Edit icon on the Survey questions section to capture why subscribers cancel. Select the reasons that match your business model and how subscribers describe leaving, for example, "Too expensive", "Not using it enough", or "Missing a feature". Keep the list short. A focused set of reasons produces cleaner Cancel Insights and makes it easier to attach the right save offer to each reason later.
  6. Keep the Nevermind options visible so subscribers who change their mind can return to their account with one click.
  7. Select Preview to confirm the page renders as expected, and click Publish.

2. Set how cancellations are processed

Tell Growth what to do when a subscriber confirms the cancellation.

  1. Open the cancel page and go to Page Settings > Billing Configurations.
  2. Select Process via Billing API so that Growth automatically cancels the subscription in Chargebee Billing when a subscriber completes the flow. If you process cancellations in your own system, select Override Billing API to fall back to a webhook, URL redirect, or email-based process instead.
  3. Confirm the post-cancellation confirmation page so subscribers see a clear outcome and next steps.

You can also set when the cancellation takes effect in Chargebee Billing: immediately, at the end of the current term, or at the end of the billing term. See Configuring cancel timing for Chargebee Billing.

3. Create a play to route cancellers to the page

A play sends your cancelling subscribers to the cancel page and lets you measure its impact.

  1. In Growth, go to Plays > Retention.
  2. Select + Create New Play, select the Cancel Page play type, and then select Proceed.
  3. Under Choose your Audience, select the audience of subscribers who initiate a cancellation. To start, target all cancelling subscribers.
  4. Select Targeting & Experimentation.
  5. Under Control, reserve a percentage of traffic as a holdout so you can measure the lift the cancel page generates against your previous experience. Chargebee Growth also provides a Control page, a no-offer cancel experience that you can keep as a consistent baseline.
  6. Under Actions, select Show cancel page and select the cancel page you built in step 1.
  7. Select Review & Publish, set the play Priority, and then select Publish Play.

Result

Subscribers who initiate a cancellation now land on your branded Cancel Page instead of a plain confirmation. The page captures their reason, reminds them of the value they would lose, and lets them return to their account. When a subscriber confirms, Growth processes the cancellation through Chargebee Billing. Open the Cancel Insights report to see why subscribers leave, and the Experience Performance report to see how your cancellation experiences (pages) are performing across the customer journey.

Summary

In this tutorial, you learned how to:

  • Configure survey reasons from the Survey Reason Library to capture churn drivers.
  • Build and brand a Cancel Page with a personalized headline, loss aversion cards, and survey reasons.
  • Run a Retention play that routes cancelling subscribers to the page, with a control group to measure lift.
  • Use Cancel Insights to understand why subscribers cancel.
