How to configure ACH Payments for US customers with a Canadian Stripe account?

Problem Statement

You want to know how to configure ach payments for us customers with a canadian stripe account.

Solution

When using a Canadian-based Stripe account, you may face issues adding new ACH payment methods for your US customers. This happens because Stripe has deprecated Legacy ACH for Canadian accounts.

As a result, Chargebee attempts to use the deprecated payment method, triggering the following error: “The payment method type us_bank_account is invalid”

To resolve this issue, you need to configure a US-based Stripe account and connect it with Chargebee to enable ACH payments for US customers.

Configuring a US-based Stripe account for ACH Payments

Follow these steps to set up a US-based Stripe account and integrate it with Chargebee:

  1. Create a US-Based Stripe account

    a. Go to the Stripe website and sign up for a new account.

    b. Ensure that the account is set up with US banking details to support ACH payments.

  2. Integrate the new Stripe account with Chargebee

    a. Login to your Chargebee site.

    b. In Chargebee, go to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Payment Gateways.

    c. Click Add Gateway and select Stripe.

    d. Enter the API keys for your US-based Stripe account.

    e. Ensure the account is configured to accept ACH payments by selecting ach_debit as the payment method.

  3. Test the ACH payment method

    a. Create a test transaction in Chargebee using a US bank account.

    b. Verify that the payment method is processed successfully without any errors.

  4. Update existing customers

    a. Notify your existing customers about the new ACH setup.

    b. Encourage them to update their payment information, if necessary, to ensure uninterrupted billing.

For detailed setup instructions, refer to the Stripe account setup guide.

Existing ACH payment methods created using your Canadian Stripe account will continue to work. However, new ACH payment methods must be added through the US-based Stripe account.

Best Practices

  • Ensure compliance with US banking regulations when setting up the new Stripe account.
  • Regularly update your Stripe account settings to stay aligned with any changes in payment processing requirements.
