Why does adding a card show "3D Secure authentication was not completed"?
Problem Statement
You are updating the card on your own Chargebee plan, and Chargebee shows 3D Secure authentication was not completed. Your bank may say they see no charge or authentication request.
Solution
This message means the 3D Secure (3DS) check your bank runs before the card is saved did not finish. For what the error means and why your bank may not see a charge, see Authentication failures when adding or updating a card. To update the card on your own Chargebee plan:
- Log in to your Chargebee Live site.
- Click the ... next to your account name (bottom left), then open your profile.
- On the My Account page, click Manage Account. See How can I update my information (billing/account/payment) with Chargebee?.
- Add or update the card and complete the 3D Secure challenge if your browser shows one. The card is saved once authentication succeeds.
If the message reappears, work through Resolve an incomplete 3D Secure authentication: confirm with your issuing bank that the card is active and enrolled for 3D Secure, then retry or use another card.
Important Notes
- Stripe may report this as
setup_intent_authentication_failure. The fix is the same. See setup_intent_authentication_failure while updating payment method. - If an end customer cannot save a card on your site (not your own plan), use the same issuer checks. See What is Chargebee's role in a 3DS transaction?.
