Why did I receive an email from Chargebee with the subject: [Chargebee] ACTION Required: Customer cancelled Billing Agreement in PayPal?

Solution

This is a Chargebee Invalid Payment Methods notification. It is triggered when PayPal's Instant Payment Notification (IPN) service reports that a customer cancelled their Billing Agreement in PayPal.

Chargebee receives IPN events from PayPal via a notification URL. When it receives a Billing Agreement cancelled event, it marks the customer's PayPal payment method as INVALID, which can lead to subscription cancellation on renewal. The customer must add a new payment method to continue.

Steps to Set It Up

  1. Configure IPN in PayPal: Follow the steps in Configuring Instant Payment Notifications for your PayPal account.
  2. Update notification recipients: Go to Settings > Chargebee Notifications > Invalid Payment Methods > Manage
