Tax labels are showing incorrectly on invoices. How can I correct it?

Problem Statement

Tax labels (e.g., VAT, GST) appear incorrectly on invoices. You want to fix the tax names and have them reflected on invoices.

Solution

Incorrect tax labels usually come from the tax configuration for the region. Verify and update the tax label in Chargebee. Tax labels on existing invoices cannot be edited; you must void and regenerate the invoice for the corrected label to appear.

Steps to Set It Up

1. Verify and correct the tax label

  1. Go to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Taxes > select the country.
  2. Check the tax label (e.g., VAT/GST).
  3. If it is wrong, click the edit (pen) icon and update it.

2. If taxes were uploaded via CSV

If you uploaded taxes via CSV (e.g., for Canada), download the CSV from Settings > Configure Chargebee > Taxes > Canada, correct the names, and upload it again.

3. Apply corrected labels to existing invoices

Tax label changes do not update existing invoices. To apply the new label:

  1. Remove the payments linked to the invoice. The amounts move to the customer's excess payments.
  2. Void and regenerate the invoice. The excess payments from step 1 are applied to the new invoice.

Note

Total Excess Payments is shown in the summary box at the top of the Customer details page. See Summary section in Customer details page for details.
