Update currency of an existing subscription

Problem statement

This article explains how to change the currency for existing subscriptions when you need customers to pay in a different currency than the one currently set on the plan.

Solution

Plan currency is set at plan creation and cannot be changed after a plan is attached to a subscription. To move existing subscriptions to a new currency, create a new plan in the desired currency, create subscriptions on that plan, and cancel the old subscriptions.

For Legacy Product Catalog (PC 1.0):

  1. Create a new plan in the currency you want.
  2. Create a subscription using the new plan (via UI or Create a subscription API).
  3. Cancel the existing subscription that used the old currency.

Important notes

Cancelling the old subscription affects churn metrics. Use this approach only when the move to the new currency is required.
