Cartes Bancaires

Cartes Bancaires is a France-based domestic card network, with over 95% of its cards co-badged with Visa or Mastercard. This co-badging allows businesses to process payments via either the Cartes Bancaires or the Visa/Mastercard networks. In the European Economic Area (EEA), businesses handling co-badged cards must offer customers the option to select their preferred network during checkout.

Chargebee supports Cartes Bancaires co-badged cards with Stripe and Chargebee Pay. For the regulation behind this requirement, see Co-badged Card Compliance.

Prerequisites

This is applicable for businesses that:

  • Are in the European Economic Area (EEA).
  • Can process Cartes Bancaires through their configured payment gateway.

Businesses that fulfill the criteria outlined above must allow their customers to choose a card network for all transactions eligible to be processed through Cartes Bancaires.

A transaction is eligible for Cartes Bancaires if:

  • The business can process Cartes Bancaires.
  • The currency is EUR.
  • The payment method is a co-badged Cartes Bancaires card.

This feature applies to both 3D Secure and non-3D Secure flows.

Configure Cartes Bancaires in Chargebee

Turn on Cartes Bancaires under Local Cards in the card settings for Stripe or Chargebee Pay.

Configure Cartes Bancaires for Stripe

  1. Log in to the Chargebee app.
  2. Click Settings > Configure Chargebee > Payment Gateways > Stripe.
  3. Click Manage under the Cards section.
  4. Turn on Cartes Bancaires under Local Cards.
  5. To use Cartes Bancaires as the default network for eligible co-badged card payments, select Set as Default Card Brand. This checkbox is optional. Customers can still choose a different network at checkout.
  6. Click Save.

Your Stripe account must also be able to process Cartes Bancaires.

Configure Cartes Bancaires for Chargebee Pay

  1. Log in to the Chargebee app.
  2. Click Settings > Configure Chargebee > Payment Gateways, and select your Chargebee Pay gateway. In the app, this gateway is labeled Chargebee Payments.
  3. Click Manage under the Cards section.
  4. Turn on Cartes Bancaires under Local Cards.
  5. To use Cartes Bancaires as the default network for eligible co-badged card payments, select Set as Default Card Brand. This checkbox is optional. Customers can still choose a different network at checkout.
  6. Click Save.

Integration-specific configuration

  • Chargebee.js: If you have used the Chargebee.js integration method, your customer chooses the preferred scheme using the paymentInfo.card.preferredScheme parameter, which is sent along with card information to tokenize the card or to run a 3D Secure flow. This applies to both Stripe and Chargebee Pay. Learn more.
  • Chargebee APIs: If you are using Chargebee APIs to pass raw card info, use the card[preferred_scheme] parameter to pass down the card brand that your customer chooses during checkout. This applies to both Stripe and Chargebee Pay.

With Chargebee Pay, the preferred scheme is sent to the gateway only when Cartes Bancaires is turned on under Local Cards. If it is turned off, Chargebee ignores the preferred scheme and the card is processed on its default network.

When a customer adds a co-badged card, Chargebee stores it under the scheme they selected: Cartes Bancaires, Visa, or Mastercard. With Chargebee Pay, later charges on that stored card, including subscription renewals, use the stored scheme.

  • If your customer wants to process a new subscription using a different scheme than the one previously selected, they must re-add the card and choose the desired scheme. This applies to both Stripe and Chargebee Pay.
  • Neither Stripe nor Chargebee Pay provides an option to update the preferred scheme for an already-added card.

Checkout flow

If you are using Chargebee's hosted pages, here is the sample checkout flow after you turn on Cartes Bancaires. The checkout flow is the same for Stripe and Chargebee Pay:

  1. Select Credit Card as the payment method.
  2. Enter the Credit Card details and select Cartes Bancaires card type from the icons next to the Card Number field. Click Next.
  3. Confirm the details, check the relevant boxes, and click Pay & Subscribe.
