What is dunning in Chargebee?

The dunning feature helps avoid subscription to churn automatically in the case of a payment failure in Chargebee.

Subscriptions are automatically renewed based on the plan's billing term, and Chargebee triggers the payment to the gateway. If the payment succeeds, the subscription successfully renews. However, if the payment fails, the subscription cannot renew and in this case Chargebee is forced to cancel the subscription, thus affecting your revenue.

In most cases, the payment failures are not expected by the customer or by us. They could be due to

  • a temporary issues with the transaction at the gateway

  • Card expiry which the customer is unaware of

  • Insufficient funds which the customer is unaware about.

In such cases, to avoid unnecessary churn, you can configure the Dunning feature, which can automatically retry the payment attempts and also notify the customer about the payment failure without cancelling the subscription.

Refer to this solution article for the steps to configure dunning on your site.
