How do I setup Gift Subscriptions in Chargebee Using Checkout V2?

Problem Statement

You want to know how do I setup gift subscriptions in chargebee using checkout v2.

Solution

Chargebee now supports the Gift subscription feature that allows customers to purchase a subscription as a gift to their family or friends. Here's more on this feature.

Note that Gifts are only supported under the latest version of the Checkout(V3).

Gift Subscription - This feature is currently available on selective plans. Please refer to the plans and pricing page. If you are on our previous plans, then this feature is available on Scale and above plans.

If you're using the earlier version of the checkout(V2), here's an alternative solution that you can implement -

  • You can create plans just like regular subscription products. If you need, you can name them differently to identify the subscription type (regular or gift).

  • For a gift subscription, you could change the text that appears on the checkout page, if required. For example, you could say This is a gift subscription, please add the recipient's email and name in the Account Information section" and similarly prompt the customer to add the recipient's shipping address in the "Shipping Address" section.

  • The card information would be that of the gift buyer. If needed, once the gift subscription expires, the receiver can change the information such as card information etc.

Limitations:

  • When the invoice is raised, it will be sent to the gift recipient(account email address).

  • Since the email address is of the recipient, only the gift recipient will have access to the self-service portal.

  • You can use the Segmentation feature in Chargebee's email notification to configure a different notification content for the gift subscription users.
