Solution

Adding metadata triggers a subscription change event. If there is a scheduled change (e.g., cancellation) that has not yet run, any subscription change (including adding metadata) will remove that scheduled change. The subscription then returns to Active. This is expected behavior.

Workaround

To add information without triggering a subscription change, use a comment on the subscription instead of metadata.
