Introducing the Chargebee CLI

Why can't I change the pricing model for an addon price point?

Problem Statement

You want to change the Pricing Model on an existing addon price point in Latest Product Catalog, but Chargebee does not let you edit that field. If you try to delete the price point so you can recreate it, Chargebee archives the item price instead of removing it. You want to change the Pricing Model on an existing addon price point in Latest Product Catalog, but Chargebee does not let you edit that field. If you delete the price point while a subscription or an invoice still references it, Chargebee archives the item price instead of removing it.

  • I need to replace an addon price point with a different pricing model.
  • I checked active subscriptions, but the addon price point still cannot be deleted.
  • The Delete an item price API returns the price point as archived when a subscription or an invoice is still attached.

Solution

This article applies to Latest Product Catalog sites.

Why the pricing model cannot be changed

The Addon Price Point ID and Pricing Model cannot be changed after you create the price point. This is expected behavior. See Addon Price Point Actions for the fields you can edit on an existing price point.

To offer the same addon with a different pricing model, create a new price point and use that price point for new subscriptions. You do not need to delete the old price point to change the pricing model.

Create a new addon price point with the pricing model you need

  1. Go to Product Catalog > Addons and open the addon.
  2. On the Create a Price Point page, enter External Name and Internal Name.
  3. In the Pricing section, select the Pricing Model and set the Price. See Defining Price Points for an Addon for the remaining fields.
  4. Click Create.
  5. Use the new Addon Price Point ID when you create or update a subscription. Pass it as subscription_items[item_price_id].
  6. Use the new Addon Price Point ID for new subscriptions, hosted checkout, and API calls.

The new price point is available for new subscriptions. Leave the old price point in place if existing subscriptions or invoices still reference it.

Why delete archives the price point instead of removing it

Why delete archives the price point instead of removing it

Chargebee permanently deletes an addon price point only when it has no dependencies. If a subscription or an invoice still uses it, the Delete an item price API archives it instead (status is archived and deleted is false). See Delete an item price using the API.

An archived price point stays available to subscriptions that already use it. It cannot be added to new or existing subscriptions.

Remove linked records if you still need to delete the old price point

If you must delete the old price point, clear the linked records first. Then delete it from Product Catalog > Addons, or call Delete an item price.

Check these dependencies:

  1. Subscriptions — any subscription that still uses the addon price point, including paused and cancelled subscriptions.
  2. Invoices — an invoice that references the price point causes the Delete API to archive it, even when no active subscription is visible on the addon details page.
  3. Differential pricing — on the addon details page, remove differential pricing linked to the addon. See How to set differential pricing for Addons in Latest Product Catalog?.
  4. Plan attachments — detach the addon from plans that list it as a mandatory, recommended, or optional applicable addon. For the broader deletion workflow, see Delete an item or item price in Latest Product Catalog.

Contact Chargebee Support if the price point still archives

If the addon price point still archives after you clear the linked records, contact Chargebee Support with:

  • Site name (test or live)
  • Addon item ID
  • Addon price point ID
  • Whether you used the UI or the Delete an item price API
  • Screenshots or API responses that show the archived status

Important Notes

  • Archiving an addon price point is not the same as deleting it. Archived price points still prevent you from deleting the parent addon. See Unable to delete an addon/charge in Latest Product Catalog.
  • If subscriptions still use the old price point, leave it archived and move new sales to the new price point.
