Next Billing Date

Next Billing Date refers to the date and time when a subscription will be renewed and payment will be collected. In Chargebee, the billing date/time is a subscription-specific attribute: it is based on the date and time of subscription activation and the billing frequency of the plan.

Example

Sign-up Date: October 1 (Monthly Plan) Next Billing Date: November 1

Sign-up Date: October 1 (Weekly Plan)
Next Billing Date: October 8

Sign-up Date: October 1, 2015 (Yearly Plan)
Next Billing Date: October 1, 2016

When a plan includes a trial period, the subscription is activated only after the trial ends. In this case, the billing date and time are based on the activation date and time.

Example

Sign-up Date: October 1 (Monthly Plan with 15-day trial period) Activation Date: October 16 Next Billing Date: November 16

You can change the billing date and time of a subscription in the following ways:

  • Chargebee site: Go to Subscriptions > Select an active subscription > Edit Next Billing Date.
  • Change Term End API: You can change the billing date and time of a subscription to postpone or advance the renewal. If proration is enabled, credits or charges are raised for the change. When charges are raised, they may be invoiced immediately or added to unbilled charges.

Note

  • You can edit the billing date and time only when the subscription is in Active status.
  • For trial and future subscriptions, the billing date and time are not set. You can only change the Trial end Date/time and the Start date/time for these subscriptions.
  • For non-renewing subscriptions, the billing date and time are not set because the subscription will be canceled. You can change the cancellation date for these subscriptions.
  • Prorated credits or charges are applied to the subscription if you choose to do so.

If I change the next billing date/time, how is the charge or credit per time unit calculated?

  • If you extend the subscription, the charge is calculated as follows:

Charge = (Plan price ÷ Number of days in the plan billing period, assuming the plan starts from the current date) × Number of days extended.

  • If you reduce the length of the subscription, credits are raised as follows:

Credits = (Plan price ÷ Total number of days in the current term of the subscription) × Number of days reduced.

Note

The above calculation is done to the millisecond if the billing mode set for Chargebee is millisecond-based.
