How to use Merge(variable) Fields in Email notifications?

Problem Statement

This article explains how to add subscription or customer-specific details to emails, where merge fields are listed, and how to use them as links or buttons.

Solution

Merge fields personalize emails with customer and subscription data from Chargebee. Access them via Configure Chargebee > Email Notifications > select a template > View all Merge Fields > select a notification.

Merge fields that render links (e.g., Pay Now) can be embedded as custom buttons.

Steps to Set It Up

Insert merge field as a link

  1. Click the + icon where you want to add the field.
  2. Click and select the field (variable) from the list. Changes are saved as drafts.
  3. Click Publish (top right) to make it available.

Insert merge field as a custom button

  1. Click View All Merge Fields (bottom left).
  2. Select an option (e.g., addon.id) and click +.
  3. Copy the link for the field.
  4. In the email template, click + > Add button > Custom button.
  5. Enter a button name and paste the link in the Link field.
  6. Click Publish.
