Variant Pricing Overview

Introduction

Variant Pricing lets you set different prices for various user segments, making it a powerful tool to optimize pricing at the segment level and maximize conversion and revenue. This feature helps you manage multiple price variations of a product or service based on variables such as geography, acquisition channel (for example, website or email), product attributes (such as t-shirt size), partners, and more—all within a single item (plan, addon, or charge) in the Product Catalog.

With Variant Pricing, you can:

  • Sell different variants of the same product or service in one listing.
  • Manage plan or addon pricing that varies by customer segment, location, channel, and more.
  • Experiment with different plan or addon trial periods and billing cycles, and run A/B tests to measure the performance of different product versions.
  • Gauge the price responsiveness of different user segments to refine your pricing strategy for better market fit.

Price Variants

Price Variants help you create variations of the same plan or addon for the same currency and billing frequency combinations. A price variant is a unique identifier that lets you differentiate Price Points with the same billing currency and frequency. You can attach a single price variant to Price Points across multiple plans, addons, or charges. Attach Price Variants to Plans, Addons, and Charges in Chargebee.

Examples

Here's an example to show how you can use variant pricing:

A SaaS company offers two plans—Standard and Premium. Due to market conditions, the company offers these plans at different prices for the same currency and frequency, depending on the customer's geography.

Plan NamePrice Points
StandardCurrencyFrequencyPrice VariantPrice
USDMonthlyUSA$100
USDMonthlyAustralia$110
USDMonthlyIndia$90
Plan NamePrice Points
PremiumCurrencyFrequencyPrice VariantPrice
USDMonthlyUSA$200
USDMonthlyAustralia$210
USDMonthlyIndia$190

Limitations

The following are the limitations of variant pricing:

  • You can add up to 100 price variants per site (Live or Test) separately.
  • This feature does not support sales-driven flows (creating a subscription via the CRM) in a few CRM integrations such as Salesforce CPQ, HubSpot Q2C, and more. It is only supported in the Salesforce integration. Note: Contact Support to enable and try out the latest salesforce integration package.
  • Switching variants for items in a subscription is not fully supported in the self-serve portal.
