Introducing the Chargebee CLI

Returning User Management

Chargebee Checkout can create additional subscriptions for existing customers. Returning customers check out faster because Checkout reuses details such as their billing address, shipping address, and payment methods.

You can integrate returning user management in either of the following ways:

  • API
  • Drop-In Script

To embed checkout in your website or application, use embedded checkout with Chargebee.js to mount checkout in a container on your page. Do not place hosted page URLs in your own iframe elements—Chargebee.js creates and manages the iframe for you.

Integrate using API

Chargebee uses the customer ID passed when you create the hosted page object to determine whether the user is a returning user. After checkout, Chargebee creates a new subscription for the customer.

Integrate using Drop-In Script

Your existing subscribers can purchase additional products or services. Chargebee uses the customer's email address to determine whether the user is a returning user.

For this to work, enable Checkout using Chargebee login. Because authentication uses the customer's email address, set the email address in the account information as a mandatory field in the field configuration. Authentication runs as the customer proceeds into checkout.

Your customers don't need to remember a password. They can log in with a one-time password (OTP) sent to their email address or by SMS.

OTP sent by email

  • Chargebee uses the email address to identify whether the user is an existing or a new user.
  • If Chargebee finds the email address, it sends an OTP to that address.
  • Users enter the OTP to authorize and proceed.
  • Subsequent purchases are added to the existing user's account.

OTP sent by SMS (Twilio integration)

The Twilio integration must be enabled for this option. Chargebee sends the OTP by SMS to the phone number the customer enters. To set up the integration, see Twilio integration.

Guest checkout

Customers can skip the sign-in process during checkout. When a customer enters an email address to begin checkout, Chargebee checks whether that email address already exists in Chargebee. If it does, the customer can skip the account sign-in, and Chargebee creates a second customer record with a different customer ID.
