How languages are set for customers in Chargebee

Problem Statement

You want to know how Chargebee determines which language to display for your customers.

Solution

Chargebee sets customer language in three ways:

  • Allow you to set a language for your customer or
  • Allow your customers to choose a language for themselves or
  • Display the details in a different language automatically

Allow you to set a language for your customer

In the Chargebee user interface, you can select the language while creating the customer or update the language setting for an existing customer.

In Leap UI - Language field in customer details page

In Classic UI - Locale field in customer details page

Once a customer’s language is set, it cannot be removed. However, you can update it to a different language at any time.

Allow your customers to choose a language for themselves

If you have enabled the Customer Portal, your customers can login and set the language themselves. They can do this by navigating to the Edit Account Details page in the Customer Portal and selecting a language from the menu there. Chargebee will display a list of languages in the customer portal. Your customers can select a language from the list.

Display the details in a different language automatically

If you have not set a language, Chargebee picks the browser's locale and displays content in the appropriate language. You can enable/disable this option:

Single Page Checkout:

Navigate to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Checkout & Portal > Field Configurations > Languages

In-app Checkout:

Navigate to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Checkout and Self serve portal > Use browser locale if customer locale is not specified
