“Cannot Create Advance Invoices” Error for Subscriptions with Scheduled Contract End Actions

Summary

Facing an error when generating an advance invoice for a subscription renewal?

If a subscription has a scheduled contract end or its remaining billing cycles are exhausted, Chargebee restricts the creation of advance invoices. This article explains why this happens and how you can address it.

Description

When attempting to generate an advance invoice for a renewal in Chargebee, you may encounter the following error:

“You cannot create advance invoices for subscriptions that have been scheduled contract end of action.”

This happens when a subscription is either nearing its end or has a contract end action set, preventing invoicing for future billing cycles. Chargebee enforces this restriction to ensure billing accurately reflects the subscription’s lifecycle and avoids customer confusion.
Additionally, if the subscription’s remaining billing cycles are set to 0, meaning there are no upcoming terms to bill for, you will also face this error.

Solution

To resolve the issue:

  • Ensure the subscription is active before generating an advance invoice.
  • Check and adjust any contract end actions if advance billing is required.
  • Extend the subscription’s billing cycles if necessary before attempting to invoice.
