Checkout.com iDEAL

iDEAL is a Netherlands-based payment method that allows customers to complete transactions online using their bank credentials. It is the most preferred online payment method in the Netherlands.

In this document, we are going to learn about configuring Checkout iDEAL. Chargebee allows you to configure and process iDeal payments with Checkout.com seamlessly. This enhances your business opportunity in the Netherlands.

To configure Checkout.com iDEAL, you must have an account with Checkout.com and should have configured both Direct Debit (SEPA) and iDEAL . This is because Checkout.com - iDEAL is generally used for one-time payments. In a subscription business, you will be charging your customers on a recurring basis. Therefore Chargebee handles recurring scenarios by converting iDeal payment method to Direct Debit (SEPA) payment method. The first payment will happen via iDeal and all future recurring payments will happen via SEPA.

Configuring Checkout.com iDEAL 

  1. Configure Checkout.com Payment Gateway . If you have already configured it, open the settings page. You can do this by clicking Settings > Configure Chargebee > Payment Gateway > Checkout.com.

  2. Enable Direct Debit (SEPA). Refer to this document to learn how.

  3. Enable iDEAL (Recurring Via SEPA Direct Debit). You have now enabled Checkout.com iDEA

  4. Make sure you have the Webhooks configured using the Notification URL. If not, you can follow the steps in the screenshot below to configure it.

Handling Recurring Payments 

Checkout.com iDEAL can be used to make the payment only once. Chargebee handles recurring scenarios by converting iDeal payment method to Direct Debit (SEPA) payment method. The first payment will happen via iDeal and all future recurring payments will happen via Direct Debit (SEPA). Therefore, it is important that you inform your customers.

Work Flow 

Here is the checkout flow for a customer using iDeal:

  1. During checkout, the customer selects iDEAL as the payment method.

  2. The customer enters the required information and chooses their bank account.

  3. The customer agrees to the privacy policies and confirms.

  4. Upon confirmation, they are redirected to the bank's page where they have to authenticate using their bank account's credentials.

  5. Once authenticated, they are redirected to the merchant's website where the checkout flow is initiated. A subscription is created and all future renewals will be charged using SEPA Direct Debit.

Note
  • iDEAL via Checkout.com for Chargebee will not work if you are using in-app browsers.
  • For payments via SEPA, Chargebee allows you to send mandate creation and payment pre-notification from Chargebee. Ensure that you collect the email address of your customers if you wish to use this feature.
